Decatur newspaper veteran Bob Fallstrom dies at age 88

DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - Veteran newspaper editor Bob Fallstrom, who spent 66 years with the (Decatur) Herald and Review, has died at age 88.

The newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1NSXR0e ) Fallstrom died Thursday of complications following surgery. He retired two weeks ago after serving as a reporter, sports writer and editor, lifestyle editor and community news editor.

Fallstrom called himself the newspaper's "good news editor" and said he was proud to tell positive stories. Managing editor Dave Dawson called Fallstrom a "talking encyclopedia" of central Illinois history.

Fallstrom's first newspaper jobs were in Dixon before joining the Herald and Review in 1949. He also was stationed as an Army clerk at the Pentagon.

Fallstrom's wife, June, died in 2000. He is survived by six children, including Associated Press sports writer R.B. Fallstrom of St. Louis.
