Coroner says MLK sculptor has died after Georgia crash

ATLANTA (AP) - The artist tapped to sculpt a Martin Luther King Jr. statue for the Georgia Capitol grounds has died after being hit by a suspected drunk driver.

Henry County Coroner Donald Cleveland says his office was informed Sunday night by Grady Memorial Hospital that Andy Davis died there. He was 53.

Cleveland says Davis was pronounced brain dead at 9:50 p.m.

Georgia state police have said Davis was on his motorcycle early Saturday when he was rear-ended. The driver, 20-year-old Corey Sease, has been charged with driving under the influence.

Davis's family issued a statement Sunday saying doctors were determining whether the artist had any brain activity.

Davis' commissioning for the King statue was announced last month. His other works include a bronze sculpture of muscian Ray Charles in Albany, Georgia.
