William R. White, former Tuskegee Airman, dies at 88

SMITHFIELD, Va. (AP) - William R. White, a former member of the famed squadron of African-American pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen, has died. He was 88.

White's son, Brandon White, says White died July 24 at his home in Smithfield.

Brandon and his sister, Inetha Holmes, say their father was a humble family man who worked hard and gave to others.

They say their father never spoke about his experiences as a Tuskegee Airman when they were children. They didn't learn that he was a member of the unit until a couple of years ago.

Brandon White says his father did what he felt he had to do in regards to serving in the war.
