Hugh D. Auchincloss III, stepbrother of Jackie Kennedy, dies

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A stepbrother of Jacqueline Kennedy has died. Hugh D. Auchincloss (AWK'-in-klahs) III was 87.

Auchincloss' children say he died Saturday of B-cell lymphoma at his home at Hammersmith Farm in Rhode Island. The property in Newport is where John F. Kennedy spent time during his presidency.

Auchincloss was known as Yusha. He and Jackie Kennedy were teenagers when her mother married his father. The two remained close until she died in 1994.

Auchincloss' daughter, Maya, remembers her father as a gentle soul known for his spirit and humor. After living in Washington and New York, he spent the last few decades of his life in Newport, where he was involved in environmental causes and the U.S. Naval War College.

Another of Auchincloss' stepsiblings was the writer Gore Vidal.
