Frank Chapot, Olympic show jumper and coach, dies at 84

BOUND BROOK, N.J. (AP) - A champion show jumper who competed in six Olympics before coaching the United States to Olympic gold has died. Frank Chapot was 84.

Wendy Chapot Nunn tells the Associated Press that her father died early Monday morning at a nursing home in Bound Brook, New Jersey.

Chapot earned a pair of silver medals while competing in six Games from 1956 to 1976. He coached the United States to its first team equestrian gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. His team won silver in 1988, and he continued to serve as the U.S. Equestrian Team coach until retiring after the 2004 Games in Athens.

Nunn says her father asked that there be no funeral. She says the family plans to hold a memorial service in September.
