Virginia AP reporter Steve Szkotak dies at age 65

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Steve Szkotak, a reporter for The Associated Press in Richmond, has died. He was 65.

Mandy Szkotak says her husband died of cancer Tuesday afternoon at his home with family at his side.

The Syracuse native worked as an editor and reporter at the AP for 14 years, covering the environment and a host of other issues. Steve McMillan, the AP's news editor for the Richmond bureau, said Szkotak was "a gifted storyteller who elevated the level of journalism here in Virginia."

Szkotak previously worked for the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Massachusetts, and for United Press International in Boston and Rhode Island.
