NAME: William Henry Keeler.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree, St. Charles Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania, 1952; licentiate in sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, 1956. Doctoral degree in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University, 1961.

EXPERIENCE: Ordained a priest in 1955. Special adviser to the Second Vatican Council. Served in the diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, from 1956 to 1989, including as bishop from 1983 to 1989. Appointed 14th archbishop of Baltimore, 1989. Appointed to the College of Cardinals in 1994. Retired as the head of the archdiocese of Baltimore in 2007.
