WASHINGTON (AP) - LGBT issues are becoming a test of loyalties for President Donald Trump - between the gay and lesbian community he says he supports and social conservatives who helped drive his victory.

Trump said in late January he would enforce an Obama administration order barring workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual identity. But on the eve of a gathering of conservatives this week, Trump revoked Obama administration guidance telling public schools to let transgender students use the public school bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the timing was driven by an impending Supreme Court deadline and pointed out that the GOP is "a states' rights party."

Both the restroom and workplace discrimination issues set off internal debate within the administration.
