(AP Photo/Erik Schelzig) NASHVILLE - Republican state Rep. Leigh Wilburn of Somerville is resigning from the Tennessee General Assembly just one year into her first term.
Wilburn said in a letter to House Speaker Beth Harwell on Tuesday that she is stepping down one year into her term "due to unforeseen circumstances involving my immediate and extended family and my business."
Wilburn is an attorney who succeeded state Rep. Barrett Rich after he retired in 2014. Her office did not immediately return a call seeking comment, and she did not have a listed home phone number in the legislative directory.
Because Wilburn's Dec. 31 resignation falls within a year of the next election, the Fayette County Commission will appoint a temporary successor.
