On December 10, 2009 in London, Dr Henry McDonald was presented with the Royal Aeronautical Society Gold Medal for 2009, the highest award made by the Society. Dr McDonald is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's SimCenter where he holds the Chair of Excellence in Computational Engineering. Dr McDonald was honored for his aerospace contributions and particularly noted was his leadership of the NASA Ames Research Center. The Royal Aeronautical Society is the foremost international organization promoting the aerospace profession and is based in the United Kingdom. Previous Gold Medal honorees include Wilbur and Orville Wright and Sir Frank Whittle, the co-inventor of the jet engine.
