DAYTON, Tenn. -- Rhea County area teams already have raised more than $11,000 of their $65,000 goal in this year's Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, organizers said.

"Everyone has some connection to cancer," said Karen Gann, local cancer society representative, at a team meeting last week.

The next scheduled event is a May 7 car wash hosted by the Rhea Medical Center team. The car wash will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the loading docks behind the hospital.

The relay is set for Aug. 13-15 at the Delaware Avenue Sports Complex in Dayton. There are 10 teams now and the goal is 20, organizers said.

Ms. Gann said 75 percent of the American Cancer Society's funds for cancer screening come from Relay for Life.

People who wish to support the relay can buy a "Torch of Hope" in honor or in memory of a loved one stricken with cancer. The minimum donation is $50.

For $10, people can buy luminarias that will be displayed around the relay course.

The relay team also is scheduling a cancer survivors brunch ahead of the race.
