Family mourns fallen Marine

An hour after seven U.S. Marines lowered his 20-year-old son into a grave, Steve Richards refused to weep.

"My time with Taylor was way too brief," he said.

He stared at the grass, took a long pause and brought his eyes back up.

"But it was a blessing."

It was a common feeling Saturday afternoon during a graveside service for Taylor Richards, the U.S. Marine Corps lance corporal from Trenton, Ga., who was killed June 26 in a combat zone in Afghanistan.

"God wants to use young people in a mighty way," the Rev. Chuck Carver said during a eulogy. "Taylor was an example of that. He wanted to change the world as a Marine."

Younger friends and older relatives who knew the fallen soldier at different times reminded outsiders of a life before his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Guest book pictures showcased a restless boy climbing on top of a restaurant table with family and a worn-out teenager with his back to an ocean.

"Before he was born, Taylor was sound asleep in his mother's womb," Mr. Richards said with a grin. "When they pulled him out, he was mad. He had a funny, mischievous side, and he could get away with anything."

Several active U.S. Marines honored their fallen comrade with full military honors, including a rifle salute.

The funeral culminated with a Purple Heart medal given to the soldier's wife and parents. During the presentation, a Marine bent to his knees and consoled Lance Cpl. Richards' wife, Emily.

Survivors said the Dade County High School graduate always knew he would join the military. His father remembered Taylor's long-term goal of teaching history.

"My son made everyone around him feel special," Mr. Richards said. "I'm going to attempt to be more like him. He served his country, and I'm proud."

After the service, mourners dabbed their eyes, some walking to their vehicles with a blank stare.

Lance Cpl. Richards' father said he understood the feeling.

"I have questions," Mr. Richards said. "As a people we should consider the cost of our actions and the price we're paying."
