30 foot fall kills worker

A construction worker who was standing on a bucket died after falling head-first from the third floor of an apartment complex under construction, police said.

In a press release early this morning, Chattanooga Police identified the fall victim as 31-year-old Jimy Henry Tovar of Acworth, Ga.

Mr. Tovar was plastering ceiling on the third floor of a building at the new Hayden Place Apartments at 1174 Pineville Road, said Sgt. Jerri Weary, a Chattanooga police spokeswoman.

There was no railing where he was working, and when the bucket he was standing on "gave way" he fell 30 feet head-first onto concrete below, Sgt. Weary added.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries, police said.

Sgt. Weary said police received the call at 3:17 p.m.

A construction worker at the scene said the deceased worker was working by himself, but declined to comment further. The worker then informed other workers not to talk to a reporter.

Hayden Place is being developed by John Wise of Wise Construction LLC, newspaper archives indicate. Attempts to reach representatives from Wise late Monday were unsuccessful.

As of May 9, 128 to 240 units were nearing completion. The $16 million luxury apartment complex was scheduled to open on June 1, according to newspaper archives.

An employee in the clubhouse of Hayden Place said: "We're not commenting on (the worker's death), thanks."

Police said no foul play is expected from the incident.

The investigation is ongoing and more information about the case will be released as it becomes available, Sgt. Weary said.
