Chattanooga: Tallan Building fire snuffed in 'nick of time'

Smoke cascaded out the doors of the Tallan Financial Center in downtown Chattanooga Thursday evening as firefighters worked to contain a fourth-floor blaze.

About 5:47 p.m., firefighters were called to the building, where they went through several smoke-engulfed floors before finding the fire, said Bruce Garner, spokesman for the Chattanooga Fire Department.

"Using a thermal imaging device, firefighters located a hot spot in one of the business suites, and the fire was in the vicinity of an aquarium," he said. "From the aquarium, it was going up the wall to the ceiling. They caught it just in the nick of time."

Mr. Garner said it appeared all workers in the building had been accounted for, and many had already left for the day when the fire broke out. No injuries were reported.

A fire investigator was called to the scene, but the cause of the fire was unknown as of Thursday evening.
