A sea of people converged on Riverfront Parkway on Saturday as boats snaked their way down the Tennessee River for the first day of the Head of the Hooch rowing regatta.

Teams from across the country and around the world are competing in the two-day event that concludes today.

Deb Farrell of the Atlanta Rowing Club said 168 organizations have come from 20 states, as well as teams from England and Canada. She added with more than 1,900 boats and 9,000 rowers it is the second-largest rowing event in the country and the biggest in the Southeast.

Nearly 500 boats will compete today, the final day of the regatta. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
