SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. - City officials are making preparations for a "first" in South Pittsburg.

On Tuesday, Gov. Phil Bredesen will visit the town accompanied by Mike McWherter, the Democratic candidate for governor, and his father, former Tennessee Gov. Ned McWherter.

"It will be the first time Gov. Phil Bredesen has come to South Pittsburg," Mayor Mike Killian said. "It is certainly a special day that the governor is coming here."

Officials said the event, which is being sponsored by the Marion County Democratic Party, will be held at the Citizens State Bank Stage on Cedar Avenue in the downtown area from 4 to 6 p.m. CDT.

Although the visit is a political trip, everyone, regardless of party affiliation, is welcome to attend, Killian said.

South Pittsburg police will close Cedar Avenue on Tuesday between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. to accommodate the event, officials said.
