Corey Mitchell, 35A man suspected of shooting a 19-year-old in the back last week with a shotgun still is on the run.
Police in Calhoun, Ga., are investigating what prompted a reported fight between Corey Mitchell and Diondre DePaul Curtis two days before Mitchell is suspected of shooting Curtis twice, police spokesman Lt. Tony Pyle said.
Mitchell's brother told police that the 35-year-old Mitchell and Curtis had fought in the street and Curtis won the fight, an incident report shows. Mitchell's brother is not identified in the report.
Mitchell, who last was seen Thursday driving a green Ford Escort, is not believed to be in Gordon County anymore, Pyle said. His last known address is in Lithonia, Ga., but he is from New York.
"We are actively seeking him," Pyle said. "At this point, anything is possible."
About 7 p.m. Thursday, someone drove by Curtis' home at 732 Martin Luther King Blvd., stuck a 20-gauge shotgun out the vehicle window and fired three shots, the report shows.
Curtis, a 2010 graduate of Gordon Central High School, was struck in the back and neck and was airlifted to Erlanger hospital, Pyle said. Another man, 20-year-old Maurice Kent, also was hit by a shotgun pellet in the leg, but he refused treatment, police said.
Curtis was released from the hospital and told investigators Monday morning that he and Mitchell had gotten into an argument that escalated into a fight a couple of days before the shooting, Pyle said.
Police don't believe the incident was drug related, and neither Mitchell or Curtis is listed as belonging to a gang, Pyle said.
All three men have criminal records, he said, but they don't involve each other.
