Marion County schools chief's home burns

POWELLS CROSSROADS, Tenn. - Marion County Schools Director Mark Griffith lost his home in a fire early Sunday morning.

Griffith said Sunday evening that he and his family were staying next door at his mother's home because his house had been damaged when a pipe froze and broke about a week ago.

He said his mother saw flames coming from the home about 3 a.m. Central time and called 911.

Charles McEntyre, assistant chief of the Powells Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department, said the house was engulfed when his crews arrived. He said crews from the Whitwell, Sequatchie and West Valley departments came to help but the home was a "total loss."

No information on the cause of the fire was immediately available Sunday.

Griffith said the family was all right for now.

"We're getting by and doing as well as could be expected," he said.
