City Council members were chatting about the city budget and agency funding Tuesday before the start of committee meetings when Councilman Peter Murphy, who is originally from New York, slipped in a "ya'll."
Later, at the end of the council's agenda session, Mayor Ron Littlefield's chief of staff, Dan Johnson, asked routinely if all business was done for the day.
"Anything else?" Johnson asked.
"I just want to hear Councilman Murphy say 'ya'll' again," Littlefield quipped.
THE REAL STORY
The County Commission voted 8-0 Thursday for a $325,000 emergency expenditure for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's officials said the expenditure was for overtime from the recent storms and rising fuel costs.
But Commission Chairman Larry Henry wanted to know more and asked County Finance Director Louis Wright to explain it.
"If we don't do this, we could get audited by the auditor or state comptroller's office," Wright said.
"That's kind of what I wanted you to say," Henry said as the audience burst out laughing.
DEMOCRATIC PICNIC
The Greater Chattanooga Democratic Women's club will hold its annual indoor summer picnic at 6 p.m. July 12 at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 175 union hall.
Special guests include Hamilton County commissioners Warren Mackey and Greg Beck, Criminal Court Clerk Gwen Tidwell, Signal Mountain Mayor Bill Lusk, Hamilton County Public Defender Ardena Garth, New Covenant Fellowship Church pastor Dr. Bernie Miller, Hamilton County Democratic Party chairman Paul Smith, and Jermain Freeman with the Obama for President re-election campaign.
