CLEVELAND, Tenn.-With a $66,325 grant from the Tennessee Board of Regents, Cleveland State Community College's fourth annual Multicultural Fair next month will have more to offer, organizers say.
A "parade of nations" will open the April 16 fair, to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the courtyard outside the L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium. Parade participants will represent the many cultures in the Cleveland area.
The fair is free and open to the public. Last year, about 400 people attended, according to the college.
"Cleveland is becoming more diverse, and this is a great way to learn about different cultures and celebrate diversity," said Jana Pankey, assistant professor of human services at the school.
Free ethnic food will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The Multicultural Fair also will feature two speakers - Herman Boone and John Quinones.
Boone was the head football coach of an Alexandria, Va., black high school when it and two white high schools were combined in 1971. Boone became the head coach of the new team. Overcoming those racial tensions was the basis for the movie "Remember the Titans," in which actor Denzel Washington played the role of Boone.
Boone will be the speaker on April 14 at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium.
ABC News' Quinones will be the guest speaker on April 15 at 7 p.m.
Quinones is a co-anchor of television's "Primetime Live" and most recently was part of the news show "20/20." Stories he has covered range from the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping to immigrants attempting to cross from Mexico to the United States on a route known as "The Devil's Highway."
Admission for both speakers is free, but tickets are required. Tickets will be available from March 28 to April 13 at the Cleveland State switchboard in the administrative building from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and until 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.
