Formal charges against a 25-year-old man accused of killing a local police sergeant are being presented by the Hamilton County District Attorney.
Jesse Mathews' arraignment is in process in the courtroom of Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Barry Steelman.
On Wednesday, District Attorney General Bill Cox filed a notice to seek the death penalty for Mathews' alleged actions in the April 2 failed armed robbery attempt in which he fired at four officers, killing Chattanooga police Sgt. Tim Chapin.
A Hamilton County grand jury indicted Mathews on one count of felony murder, one count of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated robbery on April 27.
The felony murder and first-degree murder charges merge into one charge upon conviction.
Mathews' family - father Ray Vance Mathews, mother Kathleen Mathews, sister Rachel Mathews and her boyfriend James Poteete - face a July 5 trial in federal court related to their alleged involvement in aiding Mathews after his flight from a halfway house in Colorado and following the Chattanooga robbery.
Prosecutors allege that Mathews robbed pawn shops in Colorado before fleeing with Rachel Mathews' help while on parole for previous armed robbery conviction.
