10-year-old boy shot while playing with gun in Hixson

A 10-year-old boy was shot Tuesday night while he and his 7-year-old brother were playing with a gun, Chattanooga police said.

The incident happened about 6:40 p.m. at 5949 Winding Lane in Hixson, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary. According to the boys' father, the brothers were playing outside when they apparently climbed through the window of the family RV and located the gun in a closed cabinet.

The boys began playing with the gun in the front yard and, at some point, the gun went off and struck the 10-year-old in the arm, Weary said.

The injury was not life-threatening, and the boy is expected to be treated and released from Memorial North Park Hospital, she said.

There are no charges pending at this time, she said.
