Police say Decherd woman attacked sleeping husband with hot grease

A Decherd man is recovering from third-degree burns and his wife is charged with aggravated assault after she allegedly poured hot grease on him as he slept Sunday, according to news reports in Franklin County.

Mary Annette Martin, 38, of Decherd, is charged with aggravated assault and domestic violence in an incident at the home she shared with her husband, Jason Martin, according to the Herald-Chronicle newspaper in Winchester, Tenn. Jason Martin is the nephew of former University of Tennessee at Knoxville football coach Phil Fulmer.

Authorities told the Chronicle that Mary Annette Martin said Jason Martin had "cheated" on her in May and the infidelity had been on her mind. She got up out of the couple's bed, heated a pan of grease in the kitchen and threw it on her sleeping husband.

Jason Martin suffered third-degree burns to his torso and both arms, authorities said. Medical officials said the burns could be life-threatening, according to the Chronicle. He is recovering at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

Mary Martin is scheduled to appear Dec. 28 in Franklin County General Sessions Court.
