CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Steve Haun is the new chief for the Cleveland Fire Department.

City Manager Janice Casteel announced during this week's City Council meeting that she had appointed Haun as chief.

Former Chief Chuck Atchley retired Nov. 1. Haun had been serving as interim chief.

"He has the personality and the ability to go with the job," Mayor Tom Rowland said.

Haun was surrounded by family members and many off-duty city firefighters during the meeting.

"This was an unexpected showing," he said as he and fellow firefighters gathered for a group photo.

Haun joined the department in 1981, Casteel said. After promotions to lieutenant and captain over the years, he was appointed deputy chief in 2008.

The department has five stations and 98 employees and serves the city's 27-square-mile area. It also responds to areas outside the city through a contract with Bradley County that will be phased out over the next two years.

The department responded to more than 3,500 calls for service, both fire and medical, in 2010, officials said.
