CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Charlie Rose was unanimously elected chairman of the Bradley County Board of Education on Thursday.

The nomination was made by past chairman Troy Weathers.

Rose, a veteran Bradley County educator, was elected to the board in 2008.

"We have many challenges for teachers, principals, supervisors," Rose said.

The board also unanimously elected Dr. Richard Baker as vice chairman. He was nominated by David Kelley.

Vicki Beaty unanimously was elected as the board's representative to the Tennessee Legislative Network.

"She has an excellent rapport with legislators and she has a proven record with the work she has done in Nashville on behalf of this public school system," Kelley said, making the nomination.

All three positions are for one year.

In other business, Director of Schools Johnny McDaniel said he and Weathers went to the closing for buying property on the Clayton farm for the next Blue Springs Elementary School. The school was badly damaged during the April 27 tornadoes.

Architect Angie Lyons told the board that plans for the reconstruction at Michigan Avenue Elementary School will now go to the state fire marshal next week for approval.

"We've completed all the construction documents," she said.

Copies were turned over to the board and to the construction company, Tri-Con.

After the fire marshal approval, construction could begin, Lyons said. About eight months are expected to repair the April 27 storm damage at Michigan Avenue plus building a new gymnasium.
