Attorney sought in rape charges
The preliminary hearing for a man accused of raping a woman in her apartment has been delayed to give the defendant more time to find an attorney.
Derrick L. Jones, 22, is charged with aggravated rape and is slated to appear before General Sessions Judge Clarence Shattuck on Oct. 25.
On Aug. 15, 2010, a masked intruder entered the woman's apartment and raped her repeatedly, she said. He left behind his cell phone, which contained pictures of Jones and his mother.
By January, police had identifed Jones as a suspect.
Jones denied the allegations and agreed to give a DNA sample.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation completed the DNA work in March, but Jones wasn't arrested until nearly six months later. He remains in jail on a $1 million bond.
Hearing delayed in murder case
A woman accused of shooting and killing her daughter's 17-year-old boyfriend during a street fight has had her court date moved while more evidence is analyzed.
Margaret Harris, 38, has been charged with first-degree murder in the Feb. 18 shooting death of James Dominick Sherrell, according to court documents.
Sherrell was the boyfriend of Harris' daughter, LaToya Harris.
Because evidence from the shooting still is being processed at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's crime lab in Nashville, Harris' next hearing was reset for Nov. 8 before Criminal Court Judge Rebecca Stern.
Harris, who is out on a $50,000 bond, was in court Wednesday. She declined to comment after the proceedings.
