Pikeville Mayor Greg Johnson has announced plans to resign his post effective Sept. 1, according to a letter of resignation submitted to the city on Monday.

Johnson was arrested last month on charges of theft in excess of $60,000 and four counts of official misconduct involving as much as $250,000 in public funds, according to authorities.

"As a result of recent developments and the controversy surrounding my service as the mayor of the city of Pikeville, it has become increasingly difficult for me to provide effective leadership for the city as its mayor," Johnson states in a single paragraph letter to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

Pikeville officials said the city panel could take up the matter at its next meeting on Sept. 10.

Johnson also serves on the Bledsoe County Commission. His plans for his County Commission seat are still unknown, according to county officials.
