Reporter's Notebook: 10 schools receive Pantry grants to fund programs

Hamilton County Schools received a $10,000 grant to fund programs in 10 public high schools. Funding came from The Pantry Inc., which owns about 1,600 convenience stores, primarily under the Kangaroo Express banner.

The following local schools each received $1,000:

• Brainerd High School will use the funds for teacher and student incentives.

• Central High School will purchase needed technology.

• Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts will add the grant to its general account to fund programs and supplies.

• East Hamilton Middle/High School will put the money toward a new baseball facility.

• East Ridge High School will use the money for campus upgrades, specifically new lockers.

• Hixson High School will fund educational field experiences.

• Lookout Valley Middle/High will put the money toward general funds for technology upgrades.

• Ooltewah High School will use the money for the school's library.

• Red Bank High School will add the grant to its general account to fund programs and supplies.

• Soddy-Daisy High School will put the money toward a new sound system for the school's gymnasium.

BAYLOR SENIORS UP FOR AWARD

Four Baylor School seniors have been named candidates for the prestigious 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Boarding students Matthew Chen, of Miami Gardens, Fla.; Megan Huntsinger, of Vestavia Hills, Ala.; Conner King, of Washington, D.C.; and day student Tyler Blackmon, of Rising Fawn, Ga., were selected on the basis of academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and community and school involvement.

A panel of educators will review all submissions and select 500 semifinalists in early April. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a panel appointed by the president, will make the final selection of the Presidential Scholars.

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES TO SPEAK

The Greater Chattanooga Democratic Women's Club will host County Commission District 3 candidate Mitzi Yates and Property Assessor candidate Jelena Butler this week.

Butler and Yates will speak Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers hall.

GANG COORDINATOR VISITING CLUB

Boyd Patterson, coordinator for the city's Gang Task Force, will be speak at noon today to the JFK Club at the Blue Orleans Seafood Restaurant.

The JFK Club is an arm of the Democratic Party. Patterson will talk to the club about the plans for a gang assessment currently being looked at and how the team plans on addressing gang violence.

Blue Orleans Seafood Restaurant is at the corner of Main and Market streets.
