The Chickamauga Public Library is more than just a place to find books, according to its new manager.

"It's not just a library, it's a community center," said newly appointed manager Renee Roeder. "It's amazing how many people of all different ages come in here."

She replaces retired manager Bobbie Abernathy.

Originally from Massachusetts, Roeder has lived in Chickamauga for 31/2 years and was hired in 2010 as youth coordinator for the Chickamauga library.

"Renee is found to be quick to action," said Cherokee Regional Library Director Lecia Eubanks. "She has great ideas and hopes for the library and is working hard to make them come true."

As the new manager, Roeder is not wasting time making alterations. Starting in March, the library will be open three extra hours on Fridays and will now be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"This is great because it allows children to have more access to the library since we will now be open four afternoons of the week," Roeder said.

Roeder came to Georgia when her husband, Todd, got a job with the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, where he now is chief park ranger.

"It's always great when you have someone come in with fresh eyes and new ideas but also understand and appreciate the way the community is," Eubanks said.

The library offers free computer access with a library card, e-book reader downloads and weekly Ready to Read sessions and is working to bring in science fiction, Christian fiction and more requested books, Roeder said.

"The Chickamauga library is a wonderful place to work; everyone complements each other here, and we are working to bring more public awareness of what we have to offer," Roeder said.
