Hutcheson Medical Center will be on lockdown for several more hours as investigators secure the hospital following a shooting in the intensive care unit that has left two women dead, officials said shortly before 8 p.m. tonight.

Shortly after the incident, the shooter drove to the Fort Oglethorpe police station and turned himself in, according to Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson.

Wilson said a shortly after 6 p.m. a man walked into the Fort Oglethorpe hospital and shot two women. He said the incident was domestic in nature. The suspect and the victims' names have not yet been released.

Officials told a growing number of spectators gathering outside the hospital that the patients inside are secure and that they will be able to reach their family members shortly.

The shooting occurred on the Walker County side of the hospital, which sits on the Walker-Catoosa line, Wilson said.

Officials do not believe the man had an accomplice, but the hospital is still being searched for security purposes, Hutcheson board chairman Corky Jewell said during the conference.

"We're treating this as a disaster," Jewell said.

Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Walker County Sheriff's Office, Catoosa County Sheriff's Office and the Fort Oglethorpe police are all on the scene.
