Gov. Nathan Deal says the state should encourage students to enter the skilled trades.

The Republican ceremonially launched a program Tuesday called "Go Build Georgia." It is designed to educate students on the value of learning a skilled trade and the need for skilled trade workers in Georgia.

Deal was joined at the Capitol by political, union and business leaders, including Georgia Power CEO W. Paul Bowers. He said the utility has a need for 5,000 craft laborers, including some working on a new nuclear power plant near Augusta.

State officials estimate that more than 16,000 jobs will become available over the next year for skilled laborers.
