Crew working on broken water main on Brainerd Road in Chattanooga

photo A major water line break has buckled Brainerd Road at Belvoir Avenue. Police are diverting traffic around the area and Chattanooga Assistant Public Works Director Lee Norris said "it looks like it's going to be awhile before they get it fixed." He said Tennessee American Water Co. officials are on the scene.

The Tennessee American crews working to repair the broken water main on Brainerd Road have been delayed by rainy weather and expect to reopen the road by Monday night, company spokesman Vincent Butler said Saturday.

"They've been out there all Friday night and all Saturday, but when you are laying down asphalt, weather can delay things because you have to wait for it to dry and set," he said.

No residents lost water service during the repair, although a few commercial buildings along the stretch of Brainerd Road between Belvoir and North Moore Road did lose water for a few hours, he said.

The 8-inch pipe broke Friday. Butler said the main broke because of the week's heavy rain.

"When you have periods of dry weather, and then a significant amount of rain in a short period of time, the ground will shift," he said. "It is a normal thing. But the ground just happened to shift where the line was, and the line broke."
