When the five candidates vying to be the next sheriff of Catoosa County, Ga., gathered July 12 for a candidates' forum, they discussed whether an "open carry" weapons policy makes sense.

The candidates will have a chance Tuesday night to share their thoughts on whether ordinary citizens should wear guns on their hips and other issues at a debate at the Colonnade sponsored by the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Hoping to win the seat being vacated by Sheriff Phil Summers, who's retiring, are Larry Black, Mike Helton, Jeff Holcomb, Ben Scott and Gary Sisk.

The debate begins at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open to the public at 5:30 p.m.

Each candidate will have two to three minutes to introduce himself and give the basics of his campaign platform. Then the moderator, who will be a Times Free Press reporter or editor, will pose questions. After that, questions suggested by the audience will be posed.

Candidates will be allowed brief rebuttals, and there will be a period for closing statements.
