Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson is seeking a fifth term.
Wilson's career stretches back to 1979, when he joined the Georgia Department of Corrections. He served LaFayette, Ga., as a police officer from 1980 to 1986 and was elected sheriff in 1996. When he was re-elected in November 2000, he received 73 percent of the vote. He was the first Walker County sheriff to run unopposed during the 1972 election. In 2008, he once again received 73 percent of the vote.
"It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Walker County as sheriff for the past 15 years," Wilson said in a news release. "I have dedicated my life to public service in the law enforcement profession and have thoroughly enjoyed serving [the citizens of Georgia] for the past 31 years."
If re-elected, Wilson said he will implement a state-of-the-art records and jail management system, and work to obtain accreditation by the state to improve the office's ability to prevent and reduce crime more efficiently, he stated in the news release.
Doris White started supporting Wilson in his first campaign when the late Sheriff Al Millard introduced them, she said.
"I continue to support Sheriff Wilson because he has proved himself a leader of integrity with concern of all residents of Walker County," White said. "I am proud to have him represent me as my sheriff and to call him my friend."
