A BMX bicycle track is in the works at Rossville Park.
The Rossville City Council on Monday OK'd a memorandum of understanding with the BMX Group, a loose-knit organization that wants to create a track along Salem Road behind Old Timer's Field.
"I'm looking at it for another outlet for kids that don't play traditional sports like baseball, football and soccer," Rossville Mayor Teddy Harris said. "I think it's a really good thing."
BMX Group member Karey Matlock said her organization, which consists of area BMX riders from Georgia and Tennessee, hasn't yet firmed up plans for the track. That's partly because city officials only recently settled on the park after weighing whether to put the track at the old high school football field.
"We think it's a great place to put a BMX track," Matlock said. "The details have not been worked out, but we're really excited about it."
The BMX Group's members include Rob McAllister of Rossville-based Black Crown BMX Products, she said.
The city plans to lease space to the BMX Group for a nominal fee, Harris said. The amount has yet to be negotiated.
The boundaries of the track are the fence along Salem Road on the south, the creek to the west and the road behind Old Timer's Field to the north. The BMX Group may not obstruct the road behind Old Timer's Field at any time, the memorandum states.
The memorandum requires proof of insurance for the bicycle track and says that the BMX group must maintain the same pricing as the Rossville Park concessions on the same food items.
Council members approved the memorandum by a 4-1 vote, with Rick Buff opposed.
