Just Briefly: Hamilton County school rezoning meeting Tuesday

School rezoning meeting Tuesday

The Hamilton County Board of Education will host a special work session at the Tyner Academy auditorium, 6836 Tyner Road, at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss school administrators' proposed rezoning of East Hamilton Middle/High School and several area elementary schools.

Since the plan was unveiled two weeks ago, parents have begun organizing to express their opposition to the rezoning and pitch their own solutions to the overcrowding at schools on the county's east side.

Soddy-Daisy hiring interim judge

The Soddy-Daisy City Commission is looking for an interim judge to fill the post vacated by now-General Sessions Judge David Norton earlier this week.

The Hamilton County Election Commission also is preparing to hold a special election in the Aug. 2 general election to fill the remaining two years of Norton's term.

Applications for the interim Soddy-Daisy appointment are available from City Recorder Burt Johnson or Sam Elliott, city attorney. Those are due to Soddy-Daisy City Hall by noon on March 29.

The qualifying deadline to run in the general election is April 5 at noon. Petitions are available at the Hamilton County Election Commission.

Norton resigned Wednesday after being sworn in as interim replacement for late General Sessions Judge Bob Moon. Norton also is running in the August general election to fill the rest of Moon's term.

Johnson's email address is Burt.Johnson@soddy-daisy.org and Elliott's is selliott@gearhiserpeters.com.
