Greg Martin named to school board

Our Hamilton County school board is obviously very important in guiding our schools and providing the best of opportunities for our school children. It is wonderful that there are several good citizens willing to serve us all, and somewhat sacrificially, on our school boards.

Membership on a school board does not usually offer the personal prestige and prominence of most public offices, but requires hard decisions, sometimes invites controversies, and always involves substantial responsibilities.

So it was significant that there were 11 candidates willing to serve when the Hamilton County Commission had to make the decision this week to fill the vacancy for the school board's District 3 seat.

The "winner" was Greg Martin. He is a Hixson High School graduate, has a bachelor of arts degree in Bible from Bryan College, a master of divinity degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and is the family services manager for Lakewood Memory Gardens and Hamilton County Memorial Park.

He had served previously as a school board member in Long Beach, Miss., and as chairman of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

We all should appreciate the willingness of our school board members to serve our whole community.
