Elizabeth Akins quits as Walden mayor

Elizabeth Akins, the newly elected mayor of Walden who has served as a town employee or elected official in the municipality since 1975, has resigned her post.

"It is with great regret and disappointment that I must resign the elected position of the mayor of the town of Walden," she said in a written statement. "Serving the citizens of the town of Walden has been one of my greatest joys, but due to medical reasons with no other option given to me by my doctor ... I am relinquishing my position effective Dec. 27, 2012."

In her statement, Akins thanked the citizens of Walden "who have so generously supported me. Also, I would like to thank all the elected officials and town employees I have served with over the years."
