'What's good for the country ...'

Do you recall the controversy several decades ago when then General Motors chief Charlie Wilson said, "What's good for the country is good for General Motors, and vice versa"?

GM was then the biggest and most successful American company. (It since has had some "hard times.") But Mr. Wilson's comment was quite true. Our country's economy and General Motors usually went up and down together.

Mr. Wilson was highly criticized, with his comment being twisted to say "What's good for General Motors is good for the country" -- as though he put GM "first" above country.

But our whole country does tend to thrive when our companies -- and employment -- thrive. Fortunately, today GM has cut its costs, has new models, etc., and has made some money in the first quarter of the year -- and is repaying some of its government debt. Great news!

What is good for General Motors is good for the country -- "and vice versa."
