Not 'peace on earth' everywhere

While we Americans have our economic and other problems, let us give thanks that, despite some crime and some local lawlessness, most of us generally enjoy "peace on earth" in our country -- in contrast with many other parts of the world.

Some U.S. travelers may recall fascinating visits to distant, colorful Thailand. But today, "Red Shirt" dissidents are battling Thai government troops in the streets, with tragic fatalities.

And in Afghanistan, where American troops sadly are engaged, murderous terrorist bombers frequently kill innocent people who are simply going about "normal" lives.

In Pakistan, a remotely controlled bomb was aimed at a police patrol this week, and tragically murdered 13 people.

Not far away, violent deaths continue to occur in Iraq, another place where American soldiers unfortunately are required to maintain even moderate stability against vicious al-Qaida terrorists.

There are many other serious trouble spots throughout the world. But let us be thankful for -- and do our part to maintain -- "peace on earth" in our blessed United States.
