Who can imagine the horror when two ex-cons engaged in a New Haven, Conn., home invasion, sexually assaulted and strangled a mother, beat her husband with a baseball bat, tied up two daughters, and set the house on fire with gasoline, causing the two girls to die of smoke inhalation and leaving the father as the lone survivor?
One vicious criminal has been tried and found guilty. He could be sentenced to be executed. The other suspect has yet to be tried.
For such terrible atrocities, there really is no adequate punishment available. Who can understand such terrible crimes? Who can fathom the crushing anguish of the surviving father?
