Military - and civilian - fitness

We are fortunate in the United States to have the best medical facilities in the world available for our people - and also many good educational opportunities.

So it is shocking that the most recent Pentagon analysis found that almost 70 percent of our young people ages 17 to 24 are not qualified for military service!

Why? They have no high school diploma, are obese or otherwise are in poor physical condition - or they have a criminal record!

And almost one in four of our young people taking military entrance exams doesn't pass!

Just consider not only what that means for our national defense, but for many of our young people, personally.

Can we expect their health to improve or, more likely, to become worse with age?

Will they suddenly begin to show an interest in education as adults? And if not, what will happen to them down the road?

Isn't this a subject about which all of us should be concerned, both individually and for the sake of our country?

Habits and information to promote good health aren't "secret." They are well known, and medical care is available to overcome many illnesses.

Shouldn't we all be taking reasonable steps to enjoy good health? Leading healthy, productive lives should be a high priority for everyone.
