Riverwalk extension

It is best for local projects to be funded locally. But with the federal government having granted Tennessee $7 million for a variety of projects, Chattanoogans will no doubt be glad that our community is getting nearly $1 million of that to help bring the Riverwalk closer to Lookout Mountain.

The Riverwalk extension eventually would go from Ross's Landing to St. Elmo Avenue, near the mountain.

The extension would entail construction of a 12-foot-wide, lighted path.

Construction is expected to start sometime next spring and to be completed by late 2013, officials said.

It is hoped that $2.3 million will be coming from the Tennessee Department of Transportation in the form of a grant. The county and city would have to provide some matching funds, and the Lyndhurst Foundation has pledged $1 million.

The Riverwalk extension could be an attractive and valuable asset for our community if all the economic pieces fall into place.
