Our Congress may be "popularly" elected - with two senators from each state and one representative from each of the country's 435 geographic districts.
But "popular" election doesn't make Congress "popular."
A current Associated Press-GfK poll says 44 percent of those surveyed put all or a lot of the blame for our economic troubles on Republicans in Congress. Democrats aren't far behind, with 36 percent of respondents putting all or a lot of the blame on them. Surveys on Congress as a whole show its job approval ratings are extremely low. President Barack Obama's job approval is quite low, too.
Whomever you personally hold responsible for the current state of affairs, does it not seem likely that 2012 is going to be an interesting election year?
