Rare congressional unity on Iran

Bipartisanship in Congress can be good or bad. It all depends on what lawmakers are being bipartisan about.

But there was a commendable display of bipartisanship recently in the U.S. Senate.

All 100 senators voted in favor of economic sanctions against radical Iran over its attempts to build nuclear weapons.

With Iran's sponsorship of international terrorism and its threats to destroy Israel, the United States can scarcely afford just to cross its fingers and hope that Iran won't succeed in building nukes.

No one should be under any illusion, however, about whether these new sanctions will work. If, despite the sanctions, Iran remains on the path to developing nuclear weapons, the United States and Israel alike may ultimately be forced to take action to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities.

Nobody should relish that prospect, and we hope sanctions and diplomacy will succeed. But we certainly cannot put a strike against Iran's nuclear sites off the table in dealing with the threat that country poses.
