Supreme Court should uphold Arizona immigration law

Like some other states, Arizona is weary of the federal government's unwillingness to enforce immigration law. Illegal aliens create big health care and educational costs for states. So Arizona enacted a law to fight illegal immigration. But the Obama administration sued, claiming Arizona's law intrudes on federal authority.

Now, the Supreme Court says it will weigh in on the case. That's important, because the Obama administration is also fighting similar immigration laws in Alabama, South Carolina and Utah, all of which are fed up with federal inaction on this issue.

While it's true that the federal government has responsibility for immigration, states shouldn't be saddled with high costs because Washington won't do its duty. And Arizona is not usurping deportations or other aspects of immigration law that clearly are federal jobs.

The Supreme Court should uphold Arizona's immigration law.
