Big windmills worry even the Dutch

There's more to the Netherlands than picturesque windmills, but they are a symbol of that country.

Some of the Dutch are not happy, though, about an 86-turbine windmill farm going up on their coast and in nearby waters. The structures would be equivalent in height to two football fields. They would be the Netherlands' tallest buildings, so it's feared that they would block views, disturb residents and harm tourism.

Other areas of Europe have big problems with wind power, too. The Associated Press reports that in 2007-08, 70 percent of all wind energy projects studied in Europe were caught up in lawsuits or had been put on the slow track because of objections by citizens or various organizations. More projects likely died before they ever got off the ground.

We don't oppose windmills -- unless they are propped up by subsidies or ruin someone's quality of life. But if even the Dutch have doubts about huge windmills, some skepticism on this side of the Atlantic couldn't hurt.
