Lots of new laws not 'productive'

The current Congress is "on pace to be one of the least productive in recent memory - as measured by votes taken, bills made into laws, nominees approved," a recent Tribune Newspapers article declared.

We may differ with members of Congress on many things, but we reject the idea that passing few bills makes Congress "unproductive." The question is whether a law is good - and constitutional. Many aren't.

President Calvin Coolidge, who shrank government in the 1920s and led our nation to a time of incredible prosperity before his small-government policies were abandoned and the Great Depression began, once said, "It is better to block a bad law than sign a good one."

We suppose that depends on the good and bad laws in question, but it's certainly food for thought.
