A stunning poll number

A stunning poll number

The 2012 elections are a long way off -- so a great deal can still change -- but we couldn't help but notice an amazing finding in a recent Gallup survey. The survey said registered voters are much more likely to vote for a generic Republican candidate in 2012 than for President Barack Obama.

How much more likely? Well, a generic GOP candidate got 47 percent backing, compared with only 39 percent support for Obama.

That raises the obvious question, though, of just whom the Republicans will pick to be the challenger for Obama. A number of the candidates so far have some excellent qualities. But it's not yet clear to us that any of them has the stature and charisma that will undoubtedly be needed to unseat the president.

We'll find out soon enough.
