The growing 2012 field

The number of candidates in the 2012 presidential race increased this week as Michele Bachmann, a Republican congresswoman from Minnesota, formally entered the field of hopefuls.

She is a steady, knowledgeable fiscal and social conservative who gained positive attention in a recent GOP debate.

Still, it is unclear which Republican will be the best challenger to President Barack Obama next year. Besides Bachmann, some of the challengers include Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul, Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum and Herman Cain.

Our nation faces a serious deficit in leadership, so we hope one of the candidates develops the stature needed to defeat Obama. There is much about Obama to be against. But we want an alternative Republican candidate who will have numerous qualities to be for - including the ability to beat the incumbent.
